The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a closure report in its investigation into the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput, concluding that it was a “simple case of suicide.” The Bandra magistrate court has scheduled the next hearing for April 8 for further orders.
As part of the closure report, the CBI absolved all individuals named in the two FIRs related to the case. This includes actress Rhea Chakraborty, her parents, and her brother, as well as Rajput’s sister Priyanka and a doctor. Priyanka Singh and the doctor were named in a counter-FIR filed by Chakraborty.
CBI Seeks Closure of Case
Rajput was found dead at his Bandra residence on June 14, 2020. Following allegations of foul play, the CBI took over the case and registered an FIR on August 6, 2020, naming Rhea Chakraborty, her family members, and two others. The charges included abetment of suicide, cheating, wrongful restraint, theft, criminal breach of trust, and criminal intimidation under the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The FIR was based on a complaint filed by Rajput’s father with the Patna police, who alleged that Chakraborty and others were responsible for his son’s death.
After years of investigation, the central agency filed a miscellaneous criminal application before the court, stating that there was no evidence of abetment to suicide by any of the accused. The CBI also submitted a list of documents and witnesses along with its final report.
No Further Investigation?
A CBI official told The Indian Express,
“The CBI has filed a closure report stating that it is a simple case of suicide before the Bandra court.”
However, officials did not provide further details regarding the reason behind the decision to close the case.
The report’s findings may bring legal closure to the case, but the debate around Rajput’s death continues, with many still demanding further investigation. The court’s next hearing on April 8 will determine the final steps regarding the case.
